Un-American Country Music

About this playlist

When people talk about country music, the country in question is usually America, where the likes of The Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers and Roy Acuff got the genre off the ground in the 1920s and '30s. But it's a bigger world now -- has been for quite some time, actually -- and the American country tradition has spread all over the globe. Some country artists outside America, like Aussies Keith Urban and Jamie O'Neal, found fame in the States. Others, from England's Raymond Froggatt to Irish singer Philomena Begley, stayed on their side of the pond. And over the years, plenty of British rockers, including Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe and The Mekons, have taken detours down a country road or two. Here's a whole heap of the most un-American country music you're likely to hear.
