Top 20 Rock Albums, September 2013

A slew of rock heavyweights dominate September's Top 20 Rock Albums. Surfing singer-songwriter Jack Johnson keeps the mellow beach jams a-comin' in the form of From Here to Now to You. John Mayer continues his smooth slide into Troubadour-flavored folk rock on Paradise Valley. Nine Inch Nails make a splendid return with the brooding (and rather club-savvy) Hesitation Marks. And Sheryl Crow heads to Nashville for Feels Like Home, a record decked out in country-flavored charms.

Also occupying key spots in Napster's Top 20 are a trio of Southern-fried rockers: North Mississippi Allstars, Tedeschi Trucks Band and The Wild Feathers. World Boogie Is Coming finds the Allstars once again tearing into the hill country blues tradition native to their stomping grounds in (you guessed it) northern Mississippi. Tedeschi Trucks Band's Made Up Mind is just as vital; after all, it's the Florida-based outfit's most fully realized effort to date. The Wild Feathers are the upstarts of the three. Their debut full-length spotlights a hard-swinging fusion of country rock, Tom Petty jangle and Black Keys-informed retro/revivalism.

As for all the classic-rock lifers reading this, the newly expanded edition of The Jimi Hendrix Experience live box set makes for epic exploration. There is also the long overdue official release of The Grateful Dead's Sunshine Daydream concert documentary. Originally recorded in the summer of 1972, it's one of the best live sets the group ever committed to tape. Now get listening!
