Tony Awards 2013

About this playlist

Cyndi Lauper made Broadway history Sunday night at the Tony Awards, snagging top honors for Kinky Boots, her feisty musical adaptation of a shoemaker turning to fetish items to make the rent. Not only did Kinky Boots win Best Musical over main competitor Matilda: The Musical, actor Billy Porter was recognized as Lead Performer and Ms. Lauper herself won Best Original Score -- the first time a woman has received this honor without a male collaborator (and about time, too).

Broadway women had other reasons to celebrate, with Diane Paulus winning Best Director after helming the successful revival of 1972's "Pippin," a production also catapulting Patina Miller to Best Actress (consider some of Ms. Miller's other notable performances: She originated the role of Deloris Van Cartier in the stage production of Sister Act).

Other nominated productions included Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella (which won for Best Costume Design), A Christmas Story, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Chaplin, Kathie Lee Gifford's Scandalous, and the jukebox musical/Berry Gordy biography Motown: The Musical. Regarding the latter, why not sample a few of the original recordings courtesy of Motown's helpful Motown the Musical Originals? (And while we're talking Motown, try out the awesome vintage Supremes and Michael Jackson versions of songs from Pippin).

Jane Lynch lent her star power to the year's other big revival, the ever-popular Annie, and while neither she nor the production won major awards, give a listen to Ms. Lynch's quick turn with Harry Shearer on "Like a Charity" for evidence of her comedic timing. And speaking of Glee, we offer a small tribute to Sunday night's host, Neil Patrick Harris, via his version of "Dream On," bolstered by the entire "Glee" cast. So even if you missed the Tonys, this playlist will help you get caught up with all the glitz, glamour and kinky boots.
