The Desert Rock Dynasty

About this playlist

Originating in the dusty depths of Palm Desert in Southern California, desert rock almost sounds like music that's been sucked dry by the sun: Its bluesy, psychedelic, plodding mix of rock, hardcore and metal is heavy, mucky and mystifying at once. The kings of this scene are undeniably Chris Goss (founding member of Masters of Reality) and Josh Homme, both of whom played major roles in Kyuss, a pioneering stoner rock band, and eventually Queens of the Stone Age, who officially put desert rock on the Billboard charts with 2002's "No One Knows."

Homme has since been a go-to collaborator in the rock community, working with sleaze-rockers Eagles of Death Metal and fronting super-trio Them Crooked Vultures alongside Dave Grohl and John Paul Jones. His ranch in Joshua Tree is also home to the Desert Sessions, a now 10-volume series that has brought together artists ranging from Björk to PJ Harvey to Mark Lanegan for some truly memorable impromptu recordings. Our playlist features a few tracks from these sessions, along with Homme and Goss' key contributions, collaborations and production credits over the years.
