Sara Bareilles' Favorite Tracks

About this playlist

When Sara Bareilles' major-label debut dropped in 2007, her bouncy single "Love Song" quickly became a hit. A handful of releases down the line, Bareilles has developed into a sharp, intuitive singer-songwriter with a willingness to experiment. It's this daring attitude that propels her work far above standard singer-songwriter fare. Case in point: Many of the songs on her new album, The Blessed Unrest, feature slinky electronic beats and lush vocal effects, giving her organic sound a thoroughly modern feel. So we were curious what she listens to, and we asked Bareilles to make us a playlist. The result is what she calls her "kitchen sink" mix because it features everyone from Roy Orbison and Bob Marley to Bon Iver and Arcade Fire. In her own words:

"This is my 'Everything and the Kitchen Sink,' pretty much. This was a stream-of-consciousness compilation of songs that popped into my head when I was thinking about my favorite songs. Some of them make me want to get up and dance, and some of them make me want to cry. Some are lyrically driven, more cerebral songs, and some simply feel good every time I put them on. I tend to listen to a varied and eclectic mix of music all the time and those usually end up being my favorite mixes. I'm a Sagittarius, and we are restless and like to wander. I think my musical tastes fall in line with that."
