Napster Radar: New Politics

About this playlist

"Let's steal a police car/ Like the rock stars that we are," sing New Politics over a dead ringer for Modest Mouse's "Float On" riff, while elsewhere the stomping call-and-response anthem "Tonight You're Perfect" summons the whoa-oh-ohs of a thousand hits for its electrical storm of hooks. In other words, this year's A Bad Girl in Harlem steals from the rich and gives to the radio, blatant in its bombastic synth-punk thievery and confident the shiny end justifies the means. With songcraft this steely, they might not be wrong, and their left turns are genuinely out there: "Just Like Me" combines the rap-punk fury of the Transplants with zippy ska and comes out sort of like the blue-collar antithesis of Vampire Weekend's "Diane Young." Like the runaway success of sister trio HAIM, you'll spot the influence every second. New Politics are even rowdy enough to soundtrack a drinking game just fine, should you choose to make one out of them.

And if you're looking for another soundtrack, press play on the playlist above to check out the band's own personal picks. In their words: "We like all kinds of music, not necessarily one genre, just good music. These are a bunch of songs that [we listened] to this summer at any given time -- waking up, hanging out, partying, etc. Hopefully this playlist find your ears well!"
