Remembering Benjamin Curtis

About this playlist

On December 29, 2013, the talented multi-instrumentalist Benjamin Curtis lost his nearly yearlong battle with cancer. He was just 35. As a drummer, he was an integral part of several bands in the Dallas area, first the noisy post-punk trio UFOFU and later the quirky pop act Tripping Daisy. In the '00s, he and equally gifted brother Brandon Curtis rose to national prominence as part of Secret Machines, a roaring melodic rock band that incorporated swirling shoegaze riffs, space rock ambiance and psychedelic freakouts. (Fittingly, the group contributed two Beatles covers to the equally mystical Across the Universe soundtrack.) In recent years, Ben Curtis and Alejandra Deheza collaborated in the intricate electro-pop band School of Seven Bells, whose glittering synths and dreamy beats often conjured Cocteau Twins and Slowdive. In honor of Curtis' many (and varied) musical contributions, take a spin through some of his career highlights.
