About this playlist

Pop star du jour Robin Thicke comes from a rather stacked gene pool: His father is actor/singer/songwriter Alan Thicke. (The father-son duo actually cowrote "Ain't No Hat 4 That" on the younger Thicke's Blurred Lines, which may explain why it's a highlight.) He's not the only artist with an impeccable pedigree, though: Dozens of musicians are the offspring of Hollywood or music royalty. These include Rufus and Martha Wainwright (the children of folk stars Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III); that dog.'s Petra and Rachel Haden (the daughters of jazz artist Charlie Haden); Adam Cohen (son of brooding poet extraordinaire Leonard Cohen); and the Cali-pop trio of Rooney, Phantom Planet and Coconut Records (the projects of Coppola family-related brothers Jason and Robert Schwartzman). In addition, plenty of still-vibrant veteran musicians now have children old enough to be viable collaborators, including guitar master Johnny Marr (son Nile, who also records as Man Made) and Crowded House main man Neil Finn (percussion whiz Liam Finn). To hear more talented second-generation tunes, take a spin through our Progeny Pop playlist.
