Ones to Watch: Birdy Q&A

About This Album

We here at Napster are always on the hunt for exciting, innovative new musicians. So this year we decided to reinstate our Ones to Watch series, where we focus on one emerging artist for an entire month and provide you with exclusive content from the promising up-and-comer. For the month of July, we've chosen young and precocious singer-songwriter Birdy as our featured artist. She first caught our attention with her breathtaking cover of Bon Iver's "Skinny Love," and she's got us gushing even more with her latest album, Fire Within, a set that effortlessly flows from raw piano ballads to soaring torch songs to noir-ish indie folk. Get to know Birdy a little better with this exclusive Q&A, in which she discusses some of her biggest influences and inspirations, and reveals the songs she wouldn't ever dare cover.

What made you want to play music in the first place?

Being inspired by my mother, who is a concert pianist and taught me to play the piano.

Fire Within is your first set of all original songs. Is there a main theme to the album? What were your biggest songwriting inspirations?

The album is about the past two years being away from home and feeling a little bit homesick but also experiencing something completely surreal and exciting. It's really inspired by new places I've been to and my relationships between family and friends.

What's one song you wouldn't dare cover, and why?

Probably a Jeff Buckley song because all of them are so unique and beautiful. I couldn't imagine them any other way.

What are you listening to right now?

I really love Citizen Cope at the moment, a song called "Son's Gonna Rise."

What's a song you wish you wrote?

Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car" is a song I grew up with and love so much.

If you could emulate anyone's career, whose would it be, and why?

Carole King, because she wrote so many beautiful songs that are timeless.

Name the: 1) first album you ever bought; 2) last album you bought; and 3) three albums you couldn't live without.

1) Avril Lavigne, Let Go

2) Lana Del Rey, Ultraviolence

3) Paolo Nutini, Sunny Side Up; Fleetwood Mac, Rumours; Jeff Buckley, Grace

If you were to write a memoir about yourself, what would the title be?

Strange Bird.

What does being a Napster's Ones to Watch artist mean to you?

There are so many wonderful emerging singer-songwriters at the moment. I feel really flattered to be chosen for this!
