Non-Metal Songs About Heavy Metal

About this playlist

For many, heavy metal has always been more enticing as a concept than as actual music. So it makes sense that so many artists who don't talk the talk (or crunch the crunch) have shown their love for metal in a different way. From Teenage Fanclub's power-pop-infused "Metal Baby" to Lady Gaga's wonderfully trancelike "Heavy Metal Lover," many artists have paid tribute to metal's fantasy elements. Weezer have always fantasized about leaving their mundane nerdiness behind, but on "In the Garage" Rivers Cuomo looks to Ace Frehley and Peter Criss as heroes to adorn his wall with rather than artists to model his career after. Texture bands like Califone and the jammier My Morning Jacket salute the genre with "Black Metal Valentine" and "Holdin' on to Black Metal," while Wilco's "Heavy Metal Drummer" sets a love story in an unlikely place. Countrymen like Drive-By Truckers and Todd Snider praise the life-changing power of GG Allin ("The Night GG Allin Came to Town") and Marilyn Manson ("The Ballad of the Kingsmen"), respectively, simply for their larger-than-life caricatures of villainy among humanity. Metal is one way for the good guys to indulge in the dark side.
