Lollapalooza 1994 Revisited

About this playlist

Lollapalooza's fourth year was one of their biggest and weirdest ever, with Green Day -- alt rock's biggest band since Nirvana -- sharing the main stage with Japan's bizarro noise legends Boredoms, who today seem incredibly unlikely to have been on a major label even briefly. That sums up Lollapalooza 1994 even without its other big stars, Smashing Pumpkins, Cypress Hill, A Tribe Called Quest and George Clinton. Future indie legends like Stereolab (circa "Ping Pong") and The Breeders (riding the hit Kim Deal never had with the Pixies, "Cannonball") were just cutting their teeth, as well as a surprisingly rocking Lambchop (see "Hellmouth"!). Meanwhile, the aforementioned rappers were at the top of their game, with "Insane in the Brain" and "Oh My God" and the Beasties' defining classic of alt rock and rap alike, "Sabotage."
