Latin Pop's Telenovela Stars

About this playlist

Soap operas are good for so many things: Celebrity gossip. Springboards for acting careers. Fashion and hairstyle ideas (usually for what not to do). That pure, unadulterated, guilty pleasure fix of ridiculous drama we need every so often. And in Latin America, they're also often a source of another facet of pop culture: pop music stars. Telenovelas have launched many a would-be pop star into the media stratosphere, providing a training ground where the multitalented can make connections, get their name out there and practice their amorous expressions (useful in front of a camera or behind a mic). Belinda, Thalia, Paulina Rubio and Luis Fonsi all put their time in on soaps, while Ricky Martin used the telenovela Alcanzar una estrella to transition from Menudo to grown-up pop stardom. Then, of course, there was Rebelde, the teen telenovela about kids who form a pop band that then spawned the pop band RBD (starring the show's stars) that then spawned the solo careers of its members. They include Anahi, Dulce Maria and Maite Perroni, the so-called "Queen of Telenovelas" who just released her solo debut.
