Latin Alt Rock Today

About this playlist

Much has been made about the legendary classic era of Latin alt rock: those halcyon days in the '80s and '90s when founding fathers (and mothers) like Soda Stereo, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, Caifanes, Café Tacvba and Aterciopelados walked among us mere mortals. But today's Latin alt scene is pretty darn halcyon itself, with plenty of killer bands rocking socks off across Latin America. You've got young pups like Latin Grammy-nominated Venezuelan post-punks Los Mesoneros and the mysterious Band of Bitches (who may or may not actually be a bunch of old dogs up to new tricks. In masks). Then there are the newer scene stalwarts -- bands like Zoé, Panda and Jarabe de Palo that formed 10+ years ago and are still dominating the scene. And lest you think the O.G.s have gone gently into good retirement, plenty of Latin alt's pioneers are still alive and kicking, from Aterciopelados's Andrea Echeverri to Café Tacvba to unstoppable chart-toppers Maná. Now, get to rockin'!
