Label Spotlight: Sound Pellegrino

Sound Pellegrino wants you to forget what you think you know about French dance music. Founded in 2009 by TTC's Teki Latex and Orgasmic, the Parisian label doesn't entirely break with its city's club-music history; Daft Punk's famous filters flutter deep in Sound Pellegrino's DNA, and there's a faint echo of Ed Banger's hell-for-leather aggression in its rugged beats, particularly on early releases. But Sound Pellegrino's beats are subtler, slinkier and more psychedelic.

Maybe it's wrong to call it a Parisian label, in fact. The label's roster comes from all over -- the Netherlands, Japan, San Diego, London, Stockholm, Finland, Berlin -- and Sound Pellegrino goes to great lengths not to get bogged down in any one style. Drawing influences from classic electro, U.K. garage, deep house, Continental techno, hip-hop, kuduro and more, the label's catalog amounts to a dynamic cross-section of sounds that go bump in the night, with a keen sense for killer grooves and a wry sense of humor.

The crew recently released Sound Pellegrino Presents SND.PE, Vol. 1, showcasing core artists (Teki Latex, Orgasmic, Matthias Zimmermann, Nicolas Malinowsky) alongside frequent collaborators and like-minded co-conspirators (Surkin, Todd Edwards, Modeselektor).
