Label Spotlight: Epitaph Records

About this playlist

Since forming in 1980, Epitaph Records has been one of the most successful and influential indie labels of all time. Along with launching the careers of The Offspring (whose Epitaph debut, Smash, has sold more than 12 million copies worldwide) and Rancid, the label has also served as a post-major-label landing spot for acts like Weezer, New Found Glory, Thursday and countless others.

Founder and Bad Religion guitarist Brett Gurewitz certainly has an ear for talent, whether it's breaking up-and-coming punk acts (see: Pennywise, NOFX) or being slightly ahead of what's currently blowing up (the Top 20-selling emocore act Falling In Reverse and protest punks Letlive). In this playlist, we take a trip down memory lane to revisit some of the songs that made Epitaph famous, as well as tracks that have helped move the label away from becoming a one-dimensional boutique. After all, releasing albums from folk singers Frank Turner and Tom Waits proves punk rock is much more of a mentality than a musical style.
