Indie Editor's Picks: Spring 2014

About this playlist

Just three months in and 2014's looking good for indie music, with Public Image-style post-punk from Eagulls ("Tough Luck") and at least one killer reunion song from Pixies ("Snakes"), and finally a shot at the mainstream from crowd-pleasing alt-popsters Tokyo Police Club ("Miserable"). Meanwhile, The Hold Steady channel Jimmy Page and Peter Buck in unison on "Wait a While," and Modern Baseball bring back Weakerthans-style quasi-emo on "Apartment." Black Lips' sexiest song yet is one of their doomiest and goofiest, an ode to -- um -- back massagers, called "Do the Vibrate," while The Used turn out an atypically funky tantrum on the massively catchy "Cry." And if tUnE-yArDs' excellent and complicated chant "Water Fountain" is any indication, indie rock is in for an even more exceptional and challenging year.
