Hot New Reggaeton Stars

About this playlist

A decade ago, the popularity of reggaeton moved out from the barrio to the broader world, and so did stars like Daddy Yankee and Don Omar. The raw urban sound with the dancehall-derived beat called dembow evolved into a tropical take on electronic dance music (with elements of rhythms like bachata and pop, and even Bollywood tinges). But now the raw street sound of reggaeton is back, with young artists like Colombia's J Balvin and Puerto Rico's J Alvarez revitalizing the genre while returning to its roots. Arcangel, Cosculluela, and Farruko are among the leaders of reggaeton's new generation. And Puerto Rican Tego Calderon, a pioneer of the underground scene in the outskirts of San Juan that started it all, is still going strong.
