Hip-Hop Christmas

About this playlist

There are appallingly few hip-hop Christmas songs in existence. As far as undisputed classics, there's Run-D.M.C.'s "Christmas in Hollis" and Kurtis Blow's "Christmas Rappin'"… and that's about it. For deep lovers of the genre who don't mind a little coal in the stockings, there's De La Soul's "Millie Pulled a Pistol on Santa," a nightmare about a little girl killing her abusive father, and David Banner's "The Christmas Song," a lament about broke and hungry gangsters. That's not exactly heart-warming material; at least Kanye West tried to step up in 2010 with "Christmas in Harlem." (We're still waiting on Jay Z.)

So I searched far and wide and I came up with this grab bag of holiday tunes. There's a little bit of socially conscious indie rap from Atmosphere, an early version of Outkast's "Player's Ball," a jokey tune from Afroman, and selections from Tech N9ne, Killer Mike, Snoop Dogg and more. However, it doesn't include every Christmas rap song ever made, so feel free to pad this playlist with your picks from Christmas on Death Row, Christmas at Luke's Sex Shop, Snoop Dogg's Christmas in the Dogghouse and Jim Jones' Dipset X-Mas.
