25 Years of Breaking the Mold: Fat Possum Records

About this playlist

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Fat Possum Records, one of America’s most beloved, unique and stubbornly resilient independent labels. Founded in 1992 by Matthew Johnson and Peter Redvers-Lee (the latter departing by ’94), the Mississippi-based imprint initially made a name for itself with a string of seminal releases from Delta blues greats R.L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough and T-Model Ford. Since the ’90s, the label has expanded its reach far beyond the blues. In addition to releasing vital new music from the likes of The Black Keys, Wavves and Lissie, they’ve been responsible for producing critical reissues of highly sought after records, including Americana great Townes Van Zandt and soul diva Ann Peebles. Featuring 40 tracks culled from the label’s vast catalog, our playlist is a must-hear for longtime fans and the uninitiated. Happy 25th, Fat Possum!
