Deep Rap Cuts: The Neptunes

About this playlist

Our new series Deep Rap Cuts explores hip-hop music that, for the most part, doesn't get radio airplay. First up: Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo's collaboration, The Neptunes.

The Neptunes are one of the most influential production units of the new millennium, so even many of the album cuts they've worked on are overly familiar to rap fans, whether it's Clipse's "Cot' Damn" or Ol' Dirty Bastard's "Recognize." They haven't worked together as often in recent years, thanks to Pharrell's rising profile as an entertainment hyphenate. But the duo seems far from finished, if their excellent jackhammer arrangement of Earl Sweatshirt's "Burgundy" is any indication. This playlist samples from not only The Neptunes' lengthy discography, but also Pharrell's solo production work, such as on Kendrick Lamar's "Good Kid." It includes plenty of deep cuts you may have missed.
