Daft Punk, Random Access Memories: Source Material

Daft Punk, Random Access Memories: Source Material

The robots weren't kidding: They told us not to expect a typical Daft Punk album, and Random Access Memories most certainly is not. Fortunately, they weren't right about everything. They also told us that, given the length of their career and the logic of diminishing returns, the album "is supposed to really suck." That it certainly does not, no matter how confounding its admixture of disco, R&B, soft rock and Broadway balladry might initially seem.

To help navigate Random Access Memories' labyrinthine circuits, and in the spirit of (re)discovery that the album encourages, we've put together a playlist mapping out some of its possible influences, from the work of contributors like Nile Rodgers and Giorgio Moroder to classic songs from Steely Dan, George Duke, Herbie Hancock and more. So reboot your expectations and lose yourself to the new Daft Punk.
