Blaxploitation Funk

About this playlist

In the early ‘70s, American theaters were awash in black films. Stories of private dicks with all the chicks, gangstas paying the cost to be the boss, and families struggling with Mr. Welfare Man abounded. It all made for a black movie renaissance that, unfortunately, has yet to be duplicated. While the so-called “Blaxploitation” era continues to inspire debate among cineastes, it’s indisputable the films led to some of the best soul music ever recorded. Soundtracks such as Isaac Hayes’ Shaft, Curtis Mayfield’s Superfly, and Earth, Wind & Fire’s That’s the Way of the World are just a few of the excellent albums made for the big screen. This playlist samples from the best of the lot.
