Before There Was Chillwave

About this playlist

In honor of Washed Out's crafty Paracosm, we've compiled a playlist of the "chillwave" of yesteryear -- that is, over four hours of chill-out music from all corners of the world and all periods of the rock era. We cover Ernest Greene's obvious influences Slowdive as well as electronic pioneers Terry Riley, Aphex Twin and Brian Eno, glistening indie droners Galaxie 500 and Brightblack Morning Light, and classic crooners like Willie Nelson and DeBarge. What they all have in common with a tune from, say, the Chinese music compilation Phases of the Moon or Scientist's dub odysseys is a design for relaxation. Even hip-hop from the likes of Digable Planets and P.M. Dawn coexists perfectly with Tortoise's sweeping vibraphone lullaby "Glass Museum." Calm and musical beauty are universal languages.
