Bang on a Can Festival Preview

About this playlist

On June 22, for the 28th year in a row, the DIY new-classical organization that goes by the name Bang on a Can will present a long stretch of free music known as the Bang on a Can Marathon, this time at New York's Vesey Street Winter Garden. Wherever the concerts are held, hardcore contemporary music fans can be found — sitting on folding chairs for as long as they can, taking in act after act in sets that range from 10 minutes in length to over an hour. And while the length of the marathon varies from year to year (in 2007, it went for more than 27 hours), it’s now typical for presenters to come from all over the world, just for a 15-minute spot on the Bang on a Can Marathon stage.

The full schedule for the 2014 bash hasn’t been announced yet, but some tentpole names have: Jace Clayton (aka DJ/Rupture) will be there to present his interpretation of the works of composer Julius Eastman. The vocal octet Roomful of Teeth (most recently heard singing backup on the new tUnE-yArDs album) will perform some of group-member Caroline Shaw’s Pulitzer-winning piece “Partita for 8 Voices.” The iconic composer-performer Meredith Monk will be there, too. Click play on our playlist for a sampling of music by the composers whose works are set to be performed.
