About this playlist

Kristin Gundred, better known as Dee Dee, explores late '80s college radio on the Dum Dum Girls' third album, Too True. Songs like "Rimbaud Eyes" and "In the Wake of You" explore the dark jangle of R.E.M.'s Document infused with the 4AD-style haze of the Cocteau Twins. After the arena-rock bluster of "He Gets Me High," the Pretenders-sounding "Always Looking" and "In My Head" and the lo-fi rock of "Jail La La" and "I Will Be," she's still looking for ways to surprise us with a familiar sound. And even Dum Dum Girls fans might not be aware of just how many skins Gundred has shed. Previously, she was in the trio Grand Ole Party, where she yowled like Beth Ditto -- only better -- over spare 'n jaunty garage soul produced by Blake Sennett of Rilo Kiley. Whether tinkering with fizzy girl-group pop thanks to collaborator Richard Gottehrer (of "My Boyfriend's Back" and "I Want Candy" fame) or eviscerating a "Bad, Bad Man" with a whomping rhythm section, Dee Dee has never lacked for hooks -- just listen.
