About this playlist

First this year, there was The Darkseid Recital -- saxophonist Darius Jones' album with pianist Matthew Shipp, which made our monthly jazz roundup in October. Then came The Oversoul Manual, a classical-music song cycle -- meant to conjure up an "alien birth ritual" -- for a talented vocal quartet (which appeared in our roundup of the best classical albums in November). Since claiming spots on our best-of lists in two different genres is such a rare feat (in back-to-back months, no less), we decided we had to give listeners a one-stop playlist with which to experience all of Jones' recent music. Also included are some avant-post-bop jams from Jones' trio album Big Gurl (Smell My Dream), and the saxophonist's appearance on Lung (an album-length track from the experimental rock-jazz group Little Women). From mystical chants to burning ensemble work, Jones covers a lot of ground in his music. Click play to find out just how much.
