2. Scherzo (Vivace) (Live From Centro de Acción Social por la Música, Sala Simón Bolivar, Caracas / 2013)
Label: Deutsche Grammophon (DG)
If you've resisted the hype on Yuja Wang, go straight to this album's Prokofiev Piano Concerto No. 2 (Tracks 4-7). Though the pianist's critics allege that her technical daring leaves scant room for emotion, the long cadenza in the first movement (Track 4) proves she can bring the feeling, plus a momentum that launches the fierce reintroduction of the orchestra. Gustavo Dudamel and the Simon Bolivar Orchestra meet the pianist at her level of intensity (just check the brass at 9:44 on the "Andantino"). The Rachmaninoff opener (Tracks 1-3) is fine, but the Prokofiev is go-grab-some-friends good.
