Underneath The Pine
Label: Company Studio
That titular pine must be one hell of a tree, because its shadow contains multitudes, cramming in elements of My Bloody Valentine, Phoenix, Steely Dan, Animal Collective, The Sea and Cake, Norwegian disco and Burt Bacharach. As those reference points might suggest, Toro Y Moi's Chazwick Bundick puts a primacy on swirly harmonies and lush production qualities. His sound is modest in scale and almost deceptively traditional, heavy on guitars, organs and muted funk rhythm section, and the results are as transporting as the whiff of flowers on a summer's breeze.
