Revolutions: The Very Best Of Steve Winwood
Label: Island Records
In the '80s, when he hit the Top 10 pop chart six times and topped it twice, Winwood's solo hits felt like the antiseptic epitome of yuppie sports-bar schmaltz. And more than half of this career-spanning, 17-song retrospective is solo. But following two superbly funky Spencer Davis Group smashes from his '60s adolescence and six otherworldly Traffic and Blind Faith space-blues from between, such atmospheric interchangeables as "Higher Love" and "Back in the High Life" manage to fall right in line. Result: A groove record that, in its modest way, rarely lets up.
