When Devils Strike
Label: Dope House Records
South Park Mexican's first album after being incarcerated for sexually assaulting a nine-year-old, When Devils Strike is downbeat and contemplative. It's doubtful that SPM was able to hear the background music for the tracks before writing the lyrics, so this is more poetry than rap. "At Shetoro's Crib" -- a letter to his daughter -- finds SPM confronting his mortality, his difficult childhood and his quick rise to fame. He concludes that "his enemies are closing in" and that "everything I do is so that one day our kids can see their own kind in a positive way." If nothing else, moral ambiguity makes good art.
