Me & Jill/Hendrix Cosby

Sure it's a tossed-off palate-cleanser, but Sonic Youth fans ignore this at their peril. "Macbeth" thumps, and "Platoon II" is solid mood-music. Most interesting is Kim's proving to be a better ironist than Thurston. Whereas his "Tuff Titty Rap" is more forgettable than "Master-Dik," her musique concrete-by-way-of-the-mall version of Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love" is both a funny prank and a hummable success. Yet Thurston's skuzzy take on Madonna's "Into the Groove" (graced with an extra "y") works, in part because it's more admiring than it might like to admit -- just like the cover art.
