He Moved Through the Fair

Sinead O'Connor spent a good portion of the 1990s pissing off mainstream squares -- Catholics, primarily. The most infamous incident by far occurred in '92, when the politically outspoken singer shredded a photograph of the Pope during her appearance on Saturday Night Live. The Gospel Oak EP, released after all those years of juicy controversy, totally surprised fans with its subdued and profoundly introspective feel. Sonically, its six exquisite tracks, droning and mantra-like, are a fusion of modern Irish folk and the arty world-pop Peter Gabriel innovated on his first four solo albums.
