Richard Ashcroft sings so convincingly that it’s hard not to believe that every single word from These People isn’t taken from his own life. In his first solo album in six years, the former Verve frontman takes the listener on a journey from darkness into the light, poetically detailing a series of events that caused him to step out of the spotlight for more than five years to raise his two sons, all but following John Lennon’s “house husband” years. But the distance from public life has given him an intelligent and heartfelt perspective on what it means to be an outsider in a world of insiders. Once called “Mad Richard” by the press, here he’s not so much mad as he is angry, infuriated by geo-politics, the unkindness of strangers and his own “apocalyptic mind.” He ably proves there is indeed (much) life after Brit pop, especially on standout track “Everybody Needs Somebody to Hurt.”
