Live In London
Backed by the BBC Concert Orchestra, this live set places Randy Newman's wry, reflective tunes in an emotionally rich setting (older ones like "Marie" and "Louisiana 1927" are downright crushing). The tone of Newman's voice -- in the songs and in brilliantly candid banter between -- is that of a great artist savoring his twilight career. "No one taps you to tell you you've gotten sh*tty," he quips to introduce "I'm Dead (But I Don't Know It)." Maybe that's because he's not.
