Ain't Too Proud to Beg
Phil Collins
Released:
Label:
Atlantic Records
Using his 1982 note-for-note repro of The Supremes' "You Can't Hurry Love" for a template, Phil Collins' first full-length in eight years is a more-than-faithful tribute to vintage Motown hits like "(Love Is Like a) Heatwave," "Going to a Go-Go" and "Nowhere to Run." The wily Brit even dragged a few of the original Funk Brothers into the studio, including killer bassist Bob Babbitt. Unless you're a Collins completist or a Motown fanatic or both, Going Back isn't terribly essential listening. However, it is great to see Collins, post-spinal surgery, not only singing, but playing drums as well.
