Although a distinctly tropical vibe permeates every track (there’s plenty of synthesized steel drums), Me 4 U is mostly finely crafted pop (see the No. 1 hit “Cheerleader”). Even the numbers that first appear to be Rastafarian signifiers upend expectations: “Babylon” and “Promised Land” prove largely concerned with secular matters. And as for contemporary dancehall trends, OMI’s just too sweet a guy to get down and dirty with the likes of Vybz Kartel and Alkaline. Only the slightly lascivious “Standing on All Threes” hints there’s a naughty boy grinding behind those oversized sunglasses.
