Buster Bee, originally released in 1978, is the sound of two saxophonists who know each another's chops inside and out. Prime movers on New York's underground loft scene, Julius Hemphill and Oliver Lake were also bandmates in the World Saxophone Quartet, which released its debut the year before. The common history enabled the duo to interact on a profoundly intimate level. Their dialogue is so interesting, in fact, that you don't even notice that no one else is playing on these recordings.
