Devotional Number One
Austin's Okkervil River have collaborated with one of the city's most revered sons, the legendary Roky Erickson. These songs, written by Erickson, get a delicate boost from Okkervil River's deft arrangements and light instrumentation. It's Erickson's first album in 14 years, and many songs are dark tales of personal loss, sung in a gritty, warbling Texan twang. With its fuzzy guitars and swirling bass, "John Lawman" most closely resembles the cacophony of Erickson's 13th Floor Elevators, but it's the chiming "Bring Back the Past" and the stark title cut that will leave you floored.
