Released five months after the September 2017 helicopter accident that killed calmer half Troy Gentry, the duo’s ninth album makes a worthy finale to the hardest-rocking country career of the 21st Century. Mortality figures in the first song, “Shotgun Wedding”: “It’s a wonder he ain’t dead,” they sing about would-be groom wearing a bullet-proof camouflage vest. “He ain’t ready yet.” A few tunes, including excellent pre-release single “Better Me,” are about men’s lives reformed: “I’m a sinner turned a born-aginner,” closer “All Hell Broke Loose” confesses. “Needing a Beer” and “Drink Along Song” share sing-songy suds; “Drive On Home,” like “Needing a Beer,” embraces working stiffs. Add the biker-friendly Southern rock “Crazies Welcome,” the barbecue-pit country rap “Get Down South,” the gator-swamp folk “King of the World,” and relatives arguing about immigration and military intervention over holiday dinner in “That’s the Thing About America,” and it’s even clearer how much these guys will be missed.
