About Mike City
For every hundred rappers with dollar signs cha-chinging in their eyes and guides to offensive slang words for women tucked under their arms, there's at least one rapper like Mike City swimming upstream to keep his mind and words far from the gutter that's engulfed hip-hop. Mike City takes lazy, jazzy bass and slowly spun Soul tracks and lays down rhymes that beg to be heard and reheard until you've washed all that braggadocio and tired, gun-toting machismo out of your hair. He even skips the obligatory radio tracks -- the ones with well-known R&B groups harmonizing between rhyme times -- and cuts right to the chase: it's the lyrics and music that matter here, not the brand name recognition or party potential. In a genre where male posturing is king and shoot 'em tales rule, Mike City avoids ho-hum retreads and offers brain food instead of cheesecake.
