Michael Gordon: Dystopia (Live)
Label: Cantaloupe Music
On the 2007 orchestral piece that gives this album its title, Gordon's sonic language is intact -- you're sure to hear some complex layering of roaring themes -- though the composer has set some challenges for himself. The 30-minute work (intended as a vision of Los Angeles) doesn't start with simple kernels and telegraph its climaxes, as with earlier Gordon pieces. Despite its less predictable feel, the shape of the work remains solid and engaging throughout. Elsewhere, "Rewriting Beethoven's Seventh Symphony" is OK, as far as post-minimalist provocations go, but it isn't as compelling.
