Brahms: Klavierkonzert Nr. 2 (Live From Semperoper, Dresden / 2013)
Label: Deutsche Grammophon (DG)
The first Pollini/Thielemann recording, of Brahms' first piano concerto, came out in 2011; while it was fine, it wasn't something that would make you ditch either of Pollini's prior recordings (under Karl Böhm and Claudio Abbado). This release of a 2013 live performance of Brahms' long second concerto is a more impressive matter. During the coda of the first movement and the opening of the second movement in particular, check out how satisfying the interaction between this orchestra and pianist can prove. Sounding both dreamily romantic and crisply executed, it's a cause for celebration.
