The Screaming what? Mark Lanegan's fifth solo outing is so rootsy, sparse, dark and haunting that by the middle of the cinematic "One Way Street" you'll totally forget that he used to play grunge with a couple fat dudes in the '90s. Field Songs wades deeper into the waters of rural folk and shambolic country instrumentation. "No Easy Action" weaves eastern-influenced backing vocals with lo-fi strings and a distant electric guitar. Above all, Lanegan's lyrics are the stuff of a true poet.
