Mad Girl's Love Song
Label: Not Not Fun
On her second album, Estonia's Maria Minerva still sounds like she lives at the bottom of a very deep well, singing siren songs to hapless sewer mermen. Here, though, her underground lair goes full-blown disco, with chugging house beats and lo-fi techno lending structure to amorphous chord changes and watery coo. She's at her most electrifying when she's hardest to pin down, as on the de-boned Detroit techno of "Alone in Amsterdam" or the dizzy, doo-wop sampling twirl of "The Star."
