Born in Morocco, raised in France, based in NYC, Malika Zarra makes music that's an almost perfect realization of that journey. Gestures to North African music -- bits of chaâbi, Gnawa and Berber folk, sunny Afro-pop guitars, oud strains -- float through Berber Taxi. But they're filtered through gorgeous, golden jazz textures: funky bass lines, meandering keyboards, slow, sensuous grooves. Grounding it all is Zarra's lush, dexterous voice, crooning, seducing, even ululating in English, French, Arabic and Berber. Tracks like "Issawa's Woman" offer a perfect union of Zarra's roots and routes.
