Time Present And Time Past

The harpsichord radical kicks off this brilliant album with the Baroque sound of Scarlatti's "Variations on 'La Follia'" before turning to the gothic severity of Górecki's 1980 Harpsichord Concerto (Tracks 2-3). C.P.E. Bach's series of variations on "La Folia" follows (Track 4), bringing out Esfahani's manic power. But the stunner is his take on Steve Reich's minimalist "Piano Phase for Two Pianos." (The crispness of the harpsichord version highlights Reich's "phasing" technique.) For a capper, Esfahani closes with J.S. Bach's D Minor Harpsichord Concerto (Tracks 7-9), using Brahms's cadenza.
