Talkin About Love
Label: RAL/Sony Music Entertainment
On Tree of Life, Lyfe Jennings offers his trademark songs of romance and hard truths. It's the former that impress. There's a duet with Demetria McKinney on "Talkin' About Love," and "I Love You," where he sneaks in a diss by singing, "You're my glory … my BET Award they never gave me." On "Right Now," he advises a woman to "grab that man and hold him tight," and "Pretty Is" bolsters the ladies' self-esteem by praising their inner beauty. But "Gods," "#Hashtag" and "We're Not the Same" come off as didactic, despite the nice chopsticks-like piano melody on the latter.
