Short Movie: Director's Cut
Label: Ribbon Music
Marling might be the most talented singer-songwriter of her generation. But if there's one criticism that can be leveled against her work is that it's too perfect: flawless folk-rock that doesn't jibe with the fact that life is all screwed up. Short Movie attempts to address this issue. On "Strange," "Don't Let Me Bring You Down" and "Gurdjieff's Daughter" she overwhelms her compositions with erratic gusts of emotion; uneven phrasing and nervous strumming both feel intentional in how they prevent her glorious voice from soaring. Short Movie isn't Marling's best album, yet it's her most human.
