Achin' And Shakin''
Label: Mercury Nashville
The big-label debut by this Broadway crossover to Nashville is basically two EPs: First, six "Achin'" ballads, often given a jazzy, woozy, and bluesy veneer, and peaking when Laura destroys her bed post-breakup with a hammer and gasoline, dancing around the flames and toasting the ghosts. Then, six "Shakin'" dance numbers, made impossibly ebullient with soul horns, girl-group calls and responses, Euro-square-dance fiddle breaks, funk-swung Wild Cherry and BTO riffs, disco-era Dolly Parton asides, Beyonce backtalk, handclaps, clippity clops, gospel climaxes and rap sections. "Shakin'" wins.
