Voices from the Killing Jar
Kate Soper
Released:
Label:
Carrier Records
An idiosyncratic song cycle from a marvelous young composer (and singer), this album presents new takes on a series of female characters (some of them perhaps familiar), ranging from Iphigenia to Emma Bovary. But you don't need to have all the literary backstory to appreciate the nervy distinctness of Soper's writing. Her song-forms are unique, and they incorporate an electro-acoustic blend that feels unusually organic (as in the glitch-sample noise that graces the second track).
